Yahoo offers researchers data access

Yahoo! Inc. wants to help accelerate the development of artificial intelligence — a field touching everything from data-crunching to art — by giving university researchers access to its massive data sets to promote research in the technology. The Web portal is providing academics a look at information on how 20 million users — completely anonymous — read and consume news, said Suju Rajan, director of research for personalization science at Yahoo Labs. The data set, designed for noncommercial use, is larger than what many educational institutions are usually able to obtain, she said. Google, Microsoft Corp. and other technology companies are increasingly sharing tools to improve AI technology, as computers are taught to process information more like humans.
