Whole Brain Emulation as a Building Block for AGI – Promises and Pitfalls?

I’ve been asking questions over at Fractal Futures with regards to whole-brain emulation and its ethical ramifications as a means to ‘kick-start’ what will hopefully result in Friendly AGI. To be honest, it’s a bit of a minefield – largely due to my ignorance of how one goes about creating such a thing – but also because I can’t quite wrap my head around the ethical ramifications/complications of these approaches. Perhaps someone here can shed a little more light on the issue for me. So, if I understand it correctly, whole brain emulation is one approach to building a platform for (hopefully) Friendly AGI.
