Watson moves to Silicon Valley as IBM looks to cash in on Jeopardy champ

The name Watson may call up images of the slower-witted sidekick to the world’s most famous fictional detective, Sherlock Holmes, but IBM Corp. IBM, -0.53%  hopes its artificial intelligence technology of the same name saves the 104-year-old tech giant from obscurity at the hands of Moriarty-level rivals. Known for its win against two humans on the TV quiz show “Jeopardy” in 2011, Watson — named after IBM’s first CEO, Thomas Watson Sr. — has evolved from a cluster supercomputer that could electronically press the buzzer more quickly and get many complex questions right, to an emerging cloud-based, artificial-intelligence software platform ripe for more development.
