The robots about to make their appearance in our lives are more likely to help us take an item off a grocery store shelf we can’t reach, rather than pose an existential threat to humanity, as some have warned. Robert High, the chief technology officer for IBM ’s Watson supercomputer program, says intelligent “personal” robots will make up the next stage of human-machine interaction, following the wide adoption of industrial robots—the kind that now are used across industries to build things like cars on factory floors.
