Toyota ties up with USA universities on artificial intelligence studies

Toyota today announced that it has formed partnerships with Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to open joint research center on both of those US campuses. Pratt is a former program manager at the U.S. Defense Department’s DARPA research arm, which has sponsored several self-driving vehicle challenges over the past 10 years. He spearheaded the DARPA Robotics Challenge, a competition that brought teams from around the world together to compete for $3.5 million in prize money. Toyota officials downplayed concerns that they were trailing behind Google and other carmakers in autonomous driving and said the company already has some key technologies in place after spending 20 years working in the field.
