Toyota pledges million autonomous vehicle investment

Toyota spends $50 million to accelerate self-driving car program Toyota Motor Corp is collaborating with two top USA universities on artificial intelligence and robotics research aimed at ramping up the Japanese automaker’s efforts to develop self-driving cars. Toyota also announced that Gill Pratt, the former Program Manager at DARPA (the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) and leader of the Robotics Challenge, has joined the company to oversee the research. Toyota’s artificial intelligence research project will seek to develop next-gen systems that analyze human behavior and make calculated decisions to improve the driving experience and save lives. MIT’s research will be led by Professor Daniela Rus, director-Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, while Stanford Professor Fei-Fei Li, director-Standard Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, will lead the joint Stanford/Toyota center.
