Tilley to speak on robotics and artificial intelligence


Lecture on robots/AI

Florida Institute of Technology Professor Scott Tilley will present, “Robots, AI and Society” at 8 p.m. Aug. 28 in the Olin Engineering Building Auditorium — EC118 — as the fall edition of the university’s Public Science Lecture Series gets underway.

Tilley is director of computing education in the Department of Education and Interdisciplinary Studies in the College of Science at Florida Tech. He also is a weekly technology columnist at FLORIDA TODAY.

Tilley will talk about how technology and robots could represent the “ next great leap for mankind.” The question Tilley will propose is how that technology will evolve and impact society.


Caregiver classes

Hospice of St. Francis will be offering Caregiving Education and Resource classes for current and future caregivers, their family and friend helpers in North and South Brevard County next month.

The training program consists of six-90 minute classes.

The North Brevard Class will be held 2-3:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church, 414 Pine Street, Titusville for three weeks starting on Sept. 15 and running through Oct. 15.

The South Brevard Class will be held 4:30-6 p.m. starting Sept. 30 and running through Oct. 16, at Hospice of St. Francis’ office l at 4875 N. Wickham Road, Suite 104, Melbourne.

All classes were developed nationally in response to the issues caregivers, themselves, identified. Each class focuses on different issues a caregiver will face. Hospice of St. Francis’ programs and training classes are offered free of charge to Brevard residents.

Posey hosts grant conference

U.S. Rep. Bill Posey, R-Rockledge, will host a federal grant conference from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 22 at the Maxwell King Center at Eastern Florida State College, 3865 N. Wickham Rd., Melbourne.

The conference is free and open to local not-for-profit groups and those wishing to apply and obtain federal grants. There also will be sessions on navigating the grant process.
