The coming evolution of Artificial Intelligence
A.I represents greater fulfillment of individual and human potential as well as new materials, new fuels, new health techniques, and generally a greater understanding of the material world.
LOS ANGELES, August 11, 2015 — Progress in Artificial Intelligence (AI) is sparking fears of robots run-amok and taking over the world. The latest headlines include warnings such as, “Killer Robots spark fear over the future of artificial intelligence” and “Tech Experts Warn of an Artificial Intelligence Arms Race in Open Letter.”
Artificial Intelligence, according to Stanford University, is “The science and engineering of making intelligent machines, especially intelligent computer programs. It is related to the similar task of using computers to understand human intelligence, but AI does not have to confine itself to methods that are biologically observable.”
Stanford goes on to explain that intelligence is, “Intelligence is the computational part of the ability to achieve goals in the world. Varying kinds and degrees of intelligence occur in people, many animals and some machines.”
Supporters say AI offers new opportunities to solve problems and set goals and lauds it as a new and exciting universe.
What scientists could oppose such information and new horizons?
If the universe is about information, it seems AI would be of great aid in gaining understanding. It would help in isolating and understanding each individual phenomena. Imagine knowing the exact information responsible for heat, or understanding absolute zero.
Information equals control. Once we understand something, we can manipulate it, use it, explain it. We could instantly boil water, instantly reach comfortable room temperatures.
AI could help humans understand the material. Imagine not needing a chemical reaction to create electricity, having a battery that contains electricity itself. The battery the size of a lighter could power a car.
This is a future that is possible with AI. These man-made entities can help solve the problems, make hypotheses, destroy those hypotheses and start again until a hypothesis that cannot be destroyed is reached.
Teleportation of information has already taken place, and AI can help speed the research significantly. Why is that important? A message from Voyager 1 takes over 10 hours to get to earth. With teleportation, it will be instantaneous because of the way phenomenon behaves at the quantum level.
AI would assist science in all aspects. It would objectively find information, without fear of ideology or accepted norms. AI would add to our knowledge base and find new ways to solve problems. It would be another tool to aid in working impartially, fairly, objectively.
If there is so much good that can come from AI, why is there such negative sentiment in some corners?
The only reasonable answer is fear and guilt.
There are those who fear the loss of control. AI threatens the illusions of superiority some elites use to justify their control of governments, economic pillars, academic pillars, and cultural pillars. They fear that their personal advantage of connections and ties will diminish in the face of impartial knowledge from AI. They fear that this system will create an even playing field, supporting the principals of liberty, and eliminate their unfair advantage.
AI is a construct of the human mind. AI will be a destroyer or a builder depending on how humans decide to create it. If we have morals, so then will our creation reflect us. If we sneer towards others, that will be acknowledged in the man-made AI.
AI opens the opportunity for new materials, new fuels, new health techniques, and generally a greater understanding of the material world. This greater understanding will allow greater and better exploitation of the material for the benefit of mankind and other organisms.
AI is not static, it is not monolithic, and it will develop differently around the world.
AI represents greater fulfillment of individual and human potential, the unbiased quest for knowledge.
There is nothing to fear.
