Smartphone-based systems could help driverless cars ‘see’

The first technology is named “SegNet” – a system that can capture a picture of a never-seen-before street and sort it into 12 different categories such as – sky, building, road marking, pedestrian, fence, tree, pavement etc. These results could mean a major breakthrough for the driverless auto industry as radar-based sensors are frequently more expensive than the vehicle itself. The system has been successfully tested on both city roads and motorways. Alex Kendall, a PhD student, added that it was extraordinarily good at identifying things in a photograph as it has had a lot of practice. “However, there are a million knobs that we can turn to fine-tune the system so that it keeps getting better”.
