RIKEN to be strategic center for AI development

The Yomiuri Shimbun The Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Ministry has decided to set up a strategic base for comprehensive research in information science at RIKEN, it has been learned. With the aim of developing practically applicable artificial intelligence for the medical and financial fields within 10 years, the ministry will request about ¥10 billion for related expenses in its budget for fiscal 2016. The new strategic base at RIKEN will tackle four fields of study, including “big data” whereby vast amounts of information are amassed, the “Internet of Things” in which data is exchanged between Internet-connected home electronics and vehicles, and “cybersecurity” for the protection of information, in addition to artificial intelligence.
