Researchers Train AI To Defeat Face Blurring Technologies

Researchers fed the software this picture of actor J.K. Simmons, among others, to teach it to recognize specific faces. The left column shows the original images used by the researchers, while the next four show increasingly obfuscated versions of them. The three columns on the right show another type of image protection called P3 (Privacy Preserving Photo Sharing). Generally, the less distorted the images, the more likely the program was to recognize them. Even with the virtually unrecognizable P3-obfuscated images, though, the software could correctly identify images with as much as 97 percent accuracy.
