Researchers Build Rescue Drones That Can Navigate Through Forest Trails

A team of researchers at the National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) Robotics in Switzerland and the University of Zurich have developed a method to train drones to efficiently navigate through forest trails in an effort to assist search and rescue mission for lost hikers. The team has developed software to enable such aircraft systems to autonomously identify and follow forest paths. The aircrafts are perfectly able to stay aloft and track their location when in the open air, however, a forest trail is a different story altogether. Davide Scaramuzza of the University of Zurich said that in the forest, any small error may result in a crash and the crafts need a powerful AI brain to make sense of the complex world around them. The Verge explained that…
