Report: Apple Acquires AI Start-up Perceptio

Apple has reportedly acquired Perceptio, a start-up focused on advanced artificial intelligence systems for smartphones. Led by AI researchers Nicolas Pinto and Zak Stone, the company can run AI-based image-classification technology on a phone without offloading a lot of personal data to Apple’s network. For Apple, that could mean a better Photos app. Stone and Pinto—who were profiled by Re/code last fall—also created the photo-sharing app Smoothie.
