Late last year the Commerce Department not only launched the Commerce Data Service – a data-focused startup within the office of the secretary – but appointed its first ever Chief Data Scientist Jeffrey Chen. Thursday marked the first tangible evidence of the department’s efforts to double down on its vast troves of data. On Jan. 28 it unveiled the Commerce Data Usability Project, a community-driven resource that brings context to the department’s data with tutorials and case studies.
