Providence’s data company Swipely now Upserve, reflecting focus on restaurateurs

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Technology entrepreneur Angus Davis talks of the challenges facing restaurateurs these days: High employee turnover, tight profit margins, outdated technology such as reservations systems and sales-tracking systems that don’t communicate with each other, plus a dizzying number of reviews on social media. He’s convinced his software engineers and technology pros who develop algorithms and write code to analyze data can help restaurants excel. Employing what Davis calls artificial intelligence, they examine customer trends, online reviews and even how many people a restaurant can expect to walk in the door each night. On Monday, Davis expects to unveil a new iPhone app and other data tools at the International Restaurant & Foodservice Show of New York.
