Would-be disrupters believe technology could rescue the struggling mining industry With commodity prices and shares in the world’s largest mining companies in free fall, Shahram Tafazoli flew to London last November to attend a forum hosted by miner Anglo American to discuss how technology could help the industry. As the company’s shares hit their lowest level since 1999 the atmosphere inside the four-day brainstorming event was nevertheless one of optimism. Attendees talked about using drones, unmanned robotics and the possibility of 3D printing at mines to fix broken metal parts. It was a brief respite: a month later Anglo American announced it would cuts thousands of staff and seek to get rid of more than half of its assets.
