Prisoner opens fire, shot dead at B’luru hospital
A 22-year-old mentally unstable youth facing trial in an assault case was shot dead at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuroscience (NIMHANS) in Bengaluru on Sunday, after he snatched a policeman’s rifle and started firing indiscriminately.
“The undertrial, Vishwanath, succumbed to injuries he sustained during the NIMHANS shootout,” said CH Pratap Reddy, Additional Police Commissioner.
At 7 pm, Vishwanath snatched a rifle from an escort policeman and fired 23 rounds randomly before he was shot at and critically wounded at the end of a three-hour drama. He was brought to the hospital from a central prison for treatment. City police commissioner NS Megharik said, “Vishwanath requested the policemen to remove his handcuff to go to the toilet which they did. Emerging out of it, he snatched the rifle and fired indiscriminately.”
