August 16, 2016 About New York By JIM DWYER In a few weeks, Christian Saffran will turn 46, which means it is not a minute too soon for him to be starting studies this week that will lead to doctorates in both neuroscience and medicine. If all goes perfectly, he will finish by his mid-50s. Mr. Saffran ran into a few delays on his way to starting the M.D.-Ph.D. program at Weill Cornell Medical College. His childhood school days were a tangle of unrecognized learning disabilities. He spent more than a decade in the New York Police Department, including five years as an undercover detective known as “Trey” or “Dread” who bought narcotics in Upper Manhattan.
