No such thing as a ‘male’ or ‘female’ brain

03 Dec 2015 – Neuroscientists at the University of Bern, Switzerland, have carried out the first search for sex differences across the entire human brain – and found that most have a mix of male and female. This supports the idea that human brains cannot be categorised into two distinct classes, gender is non-binary, and that gender classifications in many situations are meaningless. Catherine Riley, Wellcome Images  To test the theory that people have either a “female” or “male” brain, 1400 people were examined for variations in the size of brain regions as well as the connections between them. Although there were population-level sex differences, only 0-8% of people were ‘all-male’ or ‘all-female’.
