‘Nightmare Machine’ created by scientists knows how to terrify humans

FAIRFAX MEDIA AUSTRALIA Scientists have designed the “Nightmare Machine”, which uses algorithms to convert normal images into ones especially designed to terrify humans. The prospect of artificial intelligence is scary enough for some, yet scientists in the US are teaching machines how to terrify humans on purpose. Dr Manuel Cebrian Ramos, from Australian research unit Data61, and his colleagues at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have developed the aptly-named Nightmare Machine. The machine is an artificial intelligence algorithm that is teaching a new generation of computers not only what terrifies human beings, but also how to create new images to scare humans. The Nightmare Machine turns normal faces into scary zombie faces. It spontaneously produces zombie faces and can transform images of places into nightmare scenarios.
