Neuroscientist Steven Maier wins Grawemeyer for Psychology

He is professor of psychology and neuroscience and Center for Neuroscience director at the University of Colorado-Boulder. Maier linked behavioral control to resilience and resistance to stress in his research.  Maier’s work showed that if an individual had some measure of control over a stressful situation, he or she would be less likely to be negatively impacted and would essentially be “immunized” against future stressors over which he or she may or may not have control. “Outside the scientific community, Dr. Maier’s idea of control and its positive effects has become part of popular thinking,” said award director Woody Petry. “His work has…
