Google DeepMind has paired up with Moorfields Eye Hospital in London to build a system which can recognise eye diseases from scans. The research partnership will involve a million anonymous eye scans, and will rely on artificial intelligence (AI) to detect early signs of conditions that humans might miss. Two million people are living with sight loss in the UK, with around 360,000 registered as blind or partially sighted. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) affects more than 600,000 people in the UK and is the leading cause of vision loss.
