Microsoft using Minecraft as artificial intelligence testbed

Microsoft has announced a project to use the hugely popular building game Minecraft as a training ground for artificial intelligence software. The company’s research lab in Cambridge, UK, has developed a platform called AIX designed to allow computer scientists to use the world of Minecraft to “train” an AI system to learn how to do things, such as climb mountains in the virtual world. “The agent starts out knowing nothing at all about its environment or even what it is supposed to accomplish,” said Microsoft in a statement, adding that it then “… needs to understand – via incremental rewards – when it has achieved all or part of its goal.” The AIX platform consists of a mod for the Java version and code that helps artificial intelligence agents sense…
