Massachusetts Institute for Technology Scientists invent machine that ‘learns

The research team led by Moore-Sloan Data Science fellow Brenden Lake of New York University involved a technique called Bayesian Program Learning and used it to train computers to identify and recreate the handwritten characters based on one, instead of multiple examples. Researchers at MIT, New York University, and the University of Toronto have developed a computer system whose ability to produce a variation of a character in an unfamiliar writing system, on the first try, is indistinguishable from that of humans. During a presentation on their work, the scientists said they’ve not only built a machine-learning program, “but what the program learns – its concepts – are also programs”.
