Intel Shipping Xeon Phi ‘Knights Landing’ Processors

With its latest many-core chips, Intel is looking to take on Nvidia and its GPUs in HPC environments for workloads such as machine learning and AI. Intel officials for months have been talking about its many-core Xeon Phi “Knights Landing” processor, a chip that the company is positioning to compete with GPU accelerators like Nvidia’s Tesla products in high-performance computing environments and such emerging markets as machine learning.Originally unveiled in November 2015, officials with the chip maker announced at the ISC High Performance 2016 supercomputing show June 20 that Knights Landing—now the Xeon Phi 7200 family—is available, and that they expect a broad array of new systems from OEMs and powered by the processor to hit the market.
