Intel buys deep learning specialist Nervana Systems

Intel has agreed to buy Nervana Systems, a specialist in deep learning technology. Founded in 2014 and headquartered in San Diego, California, Nervana has a fully-optimized software and hardware stack for deep learning.  Its IP and expertise in accelerating deep learning algorithms will expand Intel’s capabilities in the field of artificial intelligence, the company said. Intel plans to apply Nervana’s software expertise to further optimize the Intel Math Kernel Library and its integration into industry standard frameworks. Nervana’s engine and silicon expertise also will advance the deep learning performance of the Intel Xeon and Intel Xeon Phi processors. An unnamed source with knowledge of the deal told Re/code that the takeover values Nervana at around USD 408 million.
