They signal the presence of potential threats and rewards, and so can guide adaptive behaviour. They are therefore prioritised in perception and attention. But sometimes our success depends on our ability to ignore an emotional stimulus and get on with the task at hand. How do we deal with emotional stimuli that are not relevant to our current goals? Can we ever truly ignore them? I will describe a series of behavioural and electrophysiological experiments that show that emotional stimuli are more distracting than neutral ones…
