The West Point graduate served in many leadership positions during his 20-year Army career. In the early 1980s, while still in the military, he attended graduate school to learn about artificial intelligence and robotics. He earned a master’s degree in 1982 and a Ph.D. in 1989 in computer science from the Naval Postgraduate School in hopes of joining a group of military officers familiar with robotic vehicles.
