Google has outlined plans to challenge Amazon’s dominance of the rapidly-growing cloud computing world, an area that it believes could one day be more lucrative than its massive web advertising business. On Wednesday, at a high-profile event in San Francisco attended by Google’s chief executive Sundar Pichai and Eric Schmidt, the chairman of its parent company Alphabet, Google said it had signed up major customers including Disney, Coca-Cola and the US retailer Home Depot.
