Giving rats screen time helps reveal brain’s ways

Turns out working in front of a computer is a real rat race. Rats will be doing just that in a London lab. Rats and mice are part of research by husband and wife team Tim Bussey and Lisa Saksida, but rather than have the rodents do something more rodent-like —say, run through a maze — these researchers have them learning to use a touch screen on a tablet. It turns out even mice can learn to use a touch screen, not only recalling familiar images but where they must appear on the screen. The mice touch their noses to the screen. Correct actions earn them reward. While the rodents are slower learners, their ability offers Bussey and Saksida insight into how people perform the same sort of memory tasks.…
