Ford’s Push to Mexico Tied to Rising Costs but Still Raises UAW Ire

Reddit Email Print Reprint Ford’s (F – Get Report) plan to double car production in Mexico over the next few years is attracting unsurprising criticism from United Auto Workers union President Dennis Williams.  In tough labor negotiations last fall, the UAW understood that it was trading higher wages paid to current members for the strong likelihood that Ford and the other two Detroit-based automakers, General Motors (GM – Get Report) and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCAU) , would ramp up production in Mexico.  Had the automakers retained a lower UAW wage scale they might have chosen to expand production in the U.S. of small cars, which generate little or no profit compared to pickup trucks, crossover and SUVs.
