Federal agency: Artificial intelligence systems qualify as drivers

Apparently recognizing that biological intelligence has its own shortcomings, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has informed Google Inc. that it will consider the AI system that pilots the company’s autonomous cars as a “driver” under federal law. The Silicon Valley Business Journal reports that the decision means Google can manufacture cars that have no pedals, a steering wheel or other devices that would allow passengers to override the system. This is an early prototype of Google’s self-driving car. The effort to put autonomous vehicles on the road will require several years of rewriting regulations.
