The function is called the automatic alternative text (AAT). It describes images to blind or visually impaired individuals. So, if your friend would post a photo of his scuba diving trip, the app will recognize visual cues from the picture and would say out loud stating that the image may contain one person, water, sky, fish, and outdoor.
