Facebook AI lets blind users ‘see’ photos

Facebook is trying to make it easier for blind people to use it by enlisting artificial intelligence to automatically read out descriptions of the billions of photos on the service. The social network is now able to “understand” images by scanning them to see whether they contain things such as food, people and trees, and will now be able to describe them to visually-impaired smartphone owners using screen reader technology, which tells users what is on the screen with a computer-generated voice. Previously, Facebook would have simply described a blind user’s News Feed by saying the name of somebody posting the image, and then saying “photo”.
