eScience Institute launches Data Science for Social Good program

This summer, data scientists at the UW’s eScience Institute launched the Data Science for Social Good (DSSG) program, which matched data scientists with UW students, high schoolers, and local organizations seeking to address urban social issues in Seattle. “One of the reasons [the eScience Institute] exists is to try to facilitate better collaboration between different departments,” said Bill Howe, associate director of the eScience Institute. “The theory here is that, by making these connections, we can do what neither side can do alone.” The eScience Institute issued a city-wide call for project proposals, and the final four projects addressed a wide variety of community concerns.
