An artificial intelligence firm owned by Elon Musk has opened a “gym” designed to train machine minds to play old-school video games. OpenAI, a non-profit organisation founded by the Tesla business mogul, has created a large number of “environments” in which artificial intelligence (AI) systems will play classic titles like Pac-Man, Space Invaders or Asteroids. Developers have been invited to pit their AI creations against each other in the gym. The machines will not be given a rank based on how clever they are, but how versatile they can be. “It’s not just about maximising score; it’s about finding solutions which will generalise well,” OpenAI explained .
