Dec. 4 — Japan plays host to an international robot show this week. As Pavel Alpeyev reports, it’s a chance for Japanese engineers to showcase their work in the field of artificial intelligence. In the 1983 cult classic “War Games,” Matthew Broderick’s character, David Lightman, marvels as a computer simulates war scenarios as it prepares to launch an actual war. Ally Sheedy’s Jennifer Mack asks, “what’s it doing?”. The response from Lightman? “It’s learning.” Even in that early-80s world, that the computer learns a valuable lesson in 4 minutes seems a little farfetched.
