CMU machine-learning professor to leave for Amazon job

Multi Structure Estate | Rostraver, PA A Carnegie Mellon University professor is leaving the school to run a division of Amazon. Alexander Smola, who had been a principal research scientist at Yahoo and a visiting scientist at Google, confirmed in a blog post that he would be leaving CMU effective July 1. The news was first reported by GeekWire. Smola will be in charge of Amazon’s machine-learning efforts, “with the task to make machine learning as easy to use and widespread as it could possibly be,” he wrote in the blog post published Wednesday. “This is a terrific task, and it was an offer that I could not turn down.”
