Bottlenecks, Challenges and Opportunities

Neuropsychiatric disorders contribute to more than 35% of overall disease burden, and with an aging society, this number will increase further. Therefore, the costs – for both patients and their loved ones, as well as for treatment and long-term health care – grow, too. In addition, the current treatments available offer relief at best but no cure. Recently,  however, major advances have been made in understanding the pathophysiologicial processes underlying such disorders, thereby promising new avenues for intervention and therapy. Both neurological and psychiatric disorders are known to have overlapping pathophysiological cascades, and due to the generation of new ideas for treatment, arising from the combined efforts of basic and clinical studies, the prospects for successful prevention and therapy of neuropsychiatric disorders have been vastly improved.
