Auto feature from text for deep learning in classification

Hello all, In the first class of the course Deep Learning for Natural Language Processing by Stanford at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sU_Yu_USrNc , the instructor mentioned that, for deep learning we can feed the input to the model and it will automatically extract the features (we do not need to define features anymore) and then classify the data. Is it true? if so, how could I do this in practice? The question I have to face now is: I have a list of text, each with labels. I want to learn from content of the text to classify the label.
