Artificial intelligence research company OpenAI launches with backing of Elon Musk

Elon Musk. (AAP file image) A non-profit artificial intelligence (AI) research company has launched in the US, with the backing of entrepreneurs and scientists including Elon Musk. The aim of OpenAI is to “advance digital intelligence in the way that is most likely to benefit humanity as a whole, unconstrained by a need to generate financial return”, according to a statement on its website. The group believes “AI should be an extension of individual human wills and, in the spirit of liberty, as broadly and evenly distributed as is possible safely”. When human-level AI approachs, OpenAI would “prioritise a good outcome for all over its own self-interest,” the statement read.
