Artificial intelligence could pose serious threat to humanity

Artificial intelligence (AI) could soon make its way to reality, say scientists. Elon Musk says AI could destroy humanity as they could gain control over human beings by surpassing their intelligence.

Stephen Hawking, Elon Musk and Steve Wozniak signed a letter seeking universal ban on autonomous weapons. The letter said empowering robots to decide themselves who to attack and who to not could have lethal results for human beings somewhere down the line.

A high-level meeting was organized in the UN in May to assess “technological developments, the ethical and sociological questions that arise from the development and deployment of autonomous weapons, as well as the adequacy and legal challenges to international law and the possible impact on military operations”.

Steven Groves, a security and legal analyst, says the proposed ban on autonomous weapons does not make sense as there is no clarity over what should be properly prohibited.

He says advanced weapons would pose no threats to humanity as they will be in compliance with the law of armed conflict, particularly its core principles of distinction and proportionality.

Many scientists, however, say that super intelligent machines meant for wars could mistreat human beings and perform immoral acts.

Those in support for artificial intelligence, on the other hand, counter that AIs would instead be a big boon to efforts to eradicate issues like poverty, war, famine and disease. They also say that if AIs are more intelligent than human beings then they would also have a better understanding of morals and ethics than human beings.
