Apple buys deep learning startup Perceptio, hints at better iOS image processing

APPLE HAS PICKED UP its second artificial intelligence (AI) outfit in two days, and this time round is looking to improve the image processing efficiency of iOS. Bloomberg reported that Apple has made it rain on Perceptio, a small startup focused on AI and deep learning.  Founded by Nicolas Pinto and Zak Stone, Perceptio develops technology that lets smartphone companies create advanced AI systems “without needing to share as much user data” in the cloud, matching up nicely with Apple’s strong position on user privacy. Perceptio, in particular, specialises in developing image-recognition systems using deep learning, as opposed to current engines that rely on cloud computing and offsite servers, suggesting that Apple could be about to bring better image processing to iOS.  Apple confirmed the purchase with its standard acquisition statement:…
