Apple buys artificial intelligence startup Emotient Inc

London-based Realeyes and Waltham, Massachusetts-based Affectiva are among the startups with Emotient using artificial intelligence techniques to infer emotions from facial recognition software. Emotient’s technology was previously used by advertisers to determine emotional reactions to advertisements. A promotional video released by Emotient two years ago asked the question: “What if your devices could read your emotions and respond to them?” Its website explains it is part of a neuromarketing wave that is driving “a quantum leap in customer understanding“. It also gives insights as to whether a company’s products are being noticed or not, along with the information regarding people’s emotional responses toward it.
