Apple appoints its first director for AI research

Apple has been planning on entering the AI segment since quite some time now. It seems like it’s now official as the company recently hired Ruslan Salakhutdinov, an associate professor in machine learning from Carnegie Mellon University as the company’s first director for AI research. A Microsoft faculty fellow, Salakhutidinov primarily researches in something known as ‘unsupervised learning’ wherein they make use of ‘multilayer Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) networks to learn representations of video sequences.’ His research also involves the study of deep learning and neural networks. Ruslan Salakhutdinov primarily works in the field of statistical machine learning and his research interests typically include Deep Learning, Probabilistic Graphical Models and Large-scale Optimization.
