Apple acquires deep learning startup VocalIQ to make Siri smarter

( AAPL ) has acquired U.K.-based speech technology startup VocalIQ, according to reports in the Financial Times and United Kingdom publication Business Weekly. Its expertise in teaching machines to understand the way people speak (instead of training humans to talk like robots) would clearly benefit Apple, which has been working to improve the aptitude of its Siri virtual assistant. Companies are working diligently to get there, however, and VocalIQ is one such company. As a person uses VocalIQ’s software, it helps a device become more accurate at predicting what commands to execute.
