Apple acquires advanced smartphone artificial intelligence startup Perceptio

The purchases of VocalIQ and Perceptio seem to indicate that Apple is simply going forward on that path, looking to find a way to improve the iPhone’s abilities significantly while still guarding the privacy of the user. Bloomberg reports that Apple has confirmed the acquisition, though the terms of the deal have not been disclosed. Perceptio is a very secretive company. As per the the individual personal Twitter and LinkedIn profiles of Nicolas Pinto and Zak Stone, founders of Perceptio, Pinto is a research scientist and computer science lecturer at MIT and Harvard. As Bloomberg notes, Perceptio was set up to develop techniques to run AI image-classification systems on smartphones, “without having to draw from large external repositories of data”.
