AI From MIT Tricks People Into Thinking They’re Hearing Real Sounds

A team of MIT researchers just crushed the Turing Test for sound. And by that, we mean they developed an algorithm capable of producing sounds so realistic that people can’t tell they’re machine-generated. Although there’s still some work to be done on the algorithm, the team anticipates having this technology to someday influence fields ranging from robotics to filmmaking. The researchers, who are operating out of MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab, employed deep learning techniques to train their algorithm. They fed large audiovisual datasets through the computer, allowing the algorithm to detect patterns and learn how to replicate them. Throughout several months, the researchers recorded about 1,000 videos with approximately 46,000 sounds of a drumstick – a tool chosen for its consistency producing sounds – prodding different materials.…
