2017: The year data science will live up to its potential

Image: iStock/Rawpixel Data science, also known as big data, represents how technology has evolved past simple functions like spreadsheet functions or word processing to harvesting insights and analytics from the [often massive] amount of data collected by organizations. This data can be based upon almost literally anything; consumer spending habits, theater box office records, meteorological activity, sunspot behavior; anything that can be tracked and from which useful insights can be gleaned. Data science isn’t new, but its popularity has skyrocketed as of late, in part because of technological advances permitting the storage and processing of large amounts of information, as well as ever-more competitive marketing demands to build best of breed organizations.
